Ashabu Kahf – The Companions of the Cave (Seven Sleepers Cave)

Continue deeper into the mountains you can head to the Ashabi Kahf Shrine Religious-Cultural Monument Complex, which is approximately 12 kilometres east of Nakhchivan City.

The complex is centred around the Ashabi Kahf, also known as the Seven Sleepers’ Cave. This is one of the most revered places in all of Azerbaijan, attracting both pilgrims and curious travelers.

The story of the Ashabu Kahf is first mentioned in Chapter 18 (Surah Al Kahf -18) of the Quran. Around 2500 years ago, an indeterminate number of youths and their dog sought refuge in a cave to escape religious (Roman emperor Decius) persecution. They fell a miraculous asleep here for 300 and 9 years and awakening to a transformed world. 

The story found in both Islamic and Christian traditions and making it a significant pilgrimage site for local Muslims. Today, the complex is a popular pilgrimage site for local Azerbaijanis who come to make wishes and pray and the cave points towards Mecca.

The cave is located on a mountain, and the path leading up consists of carved stone steps – so get ready for climb. Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic mountain views and breathtaking natural landscapes. When you reach the top of the stairs there is a natural cave which is quite impressive. The site is equipped with many tables where visitors can relax and enjoy a cup of tea after making the walk up to the cave.
